Luk Wu Ching She
Luk Wu Ching Sher is a must-visit destination at Luk Wu, with a history spanning over 130 years, making it the oldest building in this area. In 1883, the founder, Taoist priest Law Yuen Yat (Chan Ping Nam), established Seon Yeung Sin Yuen. The complex includes a main hall, with a guest hall on the left, an ancestral hall on the right, and the Po Wan Yuen, designated as a place for women to practice asceticism. Originally, it served as a Taoist temple.
Before his passing, Taoist priest Law entrusted his Taoist temple and properties to a Buddhist monk whom he felt a deep connection with, Master Ching Gun, and from then on, it became a Buddhist sanctuary. In 1955, the temple was renamed Luk Wu Ching Sher, and after renovations, Po Wan Yuen was turned into a chanting hall. The archway's plaque was re-inscribed with "Luk Wu Mountain Gate," and the couplet "A bright moon rises above the alchemist's stove, while eight faces of green mountains reflect in Luk Wu" was written to depict a tranquil and beautiful landscape painting, conveying the poet's inner peace and contemplation when faced with natural scenery.
Seon Yeung Sin Yuen within the temple was not demolished and remains well-preserved to this day, symbolizing the mutual respect between the two religious teachings, creating a unique scene. Seon Yeung Sin Yuen still retains the original statues, inscriptions, and couplets from the past. The "Seon Yeung Sin Yuen " was inscribed by the Governor of Fujian and Zhejiang, He Zhang. The couplet at the main entrance of Luk Wu was written by Leung Yiu Syu, the last top scholar of Guangdong. Its translation means that even if one finds oneself at the ends of the earth, with a pure heart one can transcend worldly concerns, standing firm like a solitary peak amidst the chaos of the human world.
