Chi Chik Lam
Chi Chik Lam is a triple-bay structure founded by a Bhikkhuni named Sum Chuen Si Tai from Daliang, Shunde, and later managed by another Bhikkhuni named Liu Yuen Si Tai.
In "The Annals of Lantau Island," one passage mentions Chi Chik Lam: "To the left of Luk Wu Village lies Ng Chit, with three bays and two wings. In front of the gate, there is a flower garden with a lotus pond, and four arborvitae trees stand tall, like towering umbrellas."
On the garden gate are the three characters " Chi Chik Lam" inscribed by Sam Hock Lui. The couplet says "With wisdom as if foolish, entering the path begins with adhering to the eight respects; accumulating gradually, becoming a Buddha stems from a single firm thought." The essence of this message is that even the wisest should be as humble as the foolish, and learning Buddhism starts with observing eight kinds of respectful behavior; the practice of Buddhism is a process of gradual accumulation, and everyone can become a Buddha through a steadfast intention.
At the main hall entrance of Chi Chik Lam, Tsou Lu also inscribed a pair of couplets. The first line reads "The sea of wisdom profound and vast, universally guides all beings back to the ocean of enlightenment;" the second line says "Amassing merit wide and large, leads all good deeds to deliver beings from the mire of delusion." The meaning of this couplet is that wisdom, like an expansive ocean, can help all creatures return to a state of enlightenment; by extensively accumulating merit, one can lead all good actions to aid sentient beings in escaping the throes of confusion.
