Ling Yan Monastery
Ling Yan Monastery is one of the renowned temples on Lantau Island, with a history of over eighty years. Located at the foot of Lower Keung Shan, it comprises five adjacent two-story buildings. The temple enshrines the Three Jewels—Vairocana Buddha, Manjushri Bodhisattva, and Samantabhadra Bodhisattva—drawing a robust stream of worshippers. Following renovations, additional structures were added, including the Ksitigarbha Hall, the Auspicious Dwelling (a three-story building housing female devotees), the Skanda Maitreya Hall at the gate, and the Dharma Protector Hall, among others. The temple has retained its original stone walls, wooden doors, and the architectural feature of tall halls and deep chambers.
According to historical records, when Ling Yan Monastery was initially constructed in 1928, Master Kam Mei came to the current site to establish the temple. Unfortunately, Master Kam Mei passed away suddenly, leaving the project incomplete. It was then overseen by Master Lingxi, who was ordained in the Caodong Qingyun branch of Zen Buddhism by Master Jor Saan. Master Ling Hei passed away in 1960. A memorial pavilion dedicated to Master Ling Hei is situated beside the Dharma Protector Hall, with an inscribed stele and a portrait commemorating him. In front of the memorial pavilion is a guest hall that also serves as a dining hall, flanked by the Merit Hall. Proceeding up the hill behind the Kwun Yam Hall, one reaches the Mahavira Hall, built against the mountain, exuding a dignified and majestic presence.
